An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to avoid talking about secret matters in all cars.
Security Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
