Britain and America have concluded a major trade agreement that will guarantee no tariffs on British pharmaceutical exports being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to increase expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This pledge ensures that duties on these crucial exports will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.

This development is in response to earlier warnings to significantly raise tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures mentioned up to one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the UK bolsters the international landscape for new treatments and brings much-needed equity to transatlantic drug exports," a release said.

Economic Importance

Medicines are one of the UK's largest exports to the America, which is clearly the largest destination for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures show that in the year leading up to the third quarter, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure represented 17.4% of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee protects jobs, boosts investment and facilitates the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Key British Pledges

The pact entails several specific commitments from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new medicines to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to raise overall public funding on treatments from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount drug companies must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates were more than 20%.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a ongoing tension between the sector and the UK government over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

These tensions were exacerbated by assertions that American consumers were charged several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Over the last 18 months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS had to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a share of its overall budget over the past decade.
