Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
